«Re imagining the New Man / Practicing civic duties through social and visual media»

U.S. Embassy in Tajikistan, Dushanbe Art Ground 2014

synopsis

The film is made in the style of «found footage», within the project «Re imagining the New Man / Practicing civic duties through social and visual media» In this paper, fragments from the Soviet documentaries (the list is given in the closing credits), as well as an element of "time loop", which can be found in many works, including the well-known feature film of Harold Ramis Groundhog Day.

In my work I tried to visualize the phenomenon of "time loop" and show two ways of being human. The first path in a time loop - live to the past  and indifference to the present... The second way - a keen interest to the present and as a consequence of a breakthrough in the future

synopsis

... Arobakash pushes and rolls a cart through the busy streets of the city. He is maneuvering between cars, pushing the cart on the rise, and keeps it on the descent. He goes round oncoming pedestrians and warns those who are ahead ... Someone sees him as a rickshaw, that pushes a cart under the sounds of exotic music, another as a hero that carries a heavy burden and many simply do not notice him.... But he does not care about the thoughts of passers ... it is time to rest. He lies down on the grass in the shade of trees, smokes coveted potion, and sees through the smoke and leaves, Sun, that slowly turns into the wheel... with a smile on his lips, aware that all changed: people, streets, cars ... the Sun-wheel remained unchanged and accompanied him all day ....

Synopsis

a canvas in flames...the ash will serve for creating a fact that has inspired...circle closed.

The basis for this work is the well-known history of the creation of Picasso's masterpiece the "Girls of Avignon". As confirmed by art historians, the inspiration for this great artwork was an exhibition of African sculptures, which Picasso visited.

We intended to track the connection between the artwork of Picasso and the artwork of the unknown African artists, who are unknown to us and who have so impressed the great Spaniard. For this, we needed to transfer the reproduction of the image into a different substance capable of surrounding this connection. To put it simply, burning the reproduction after which the remaining ashes have become the source for recreating the original source of inspiration, i.e. the masks themselves. The process of burning is reflected in a video with all possible digital effects, and with scary, irritating, frightening music, as if the whole brothel would be on flames with its all of its characters and clientele... And the shift across the prism of time to the wild, black continent, to the creators of those magical masks, is not for the faint of heart. But everything ultimately comes to an end, the wind carries the ashes away, revealing a mask to us; and the chain is closed...silently.

The theme of birth and death of arts in the 20th century appears as one of the most important things. The painting, Girls of Avignon" of Picasso marked the birth of cubism. In the creation of this work, Picasso was inspired by archaic arts. 'Symbolically burning his "Girls of Avignon" we talked about the circle of life, about the death; return to archaic creativity, which once again inspires the birth of new arts.
